What Damage Can Termites Cause

Termites are small, pesky insects that destroy wood. They can destroy the structure on an object in a short amount of time. Termites can infest your home and cause terrible damage to your property. If you have termites, it is important to get rid of them as quickly as possible. Termite damage repair can be very expensive if not treated as soon as possible.

Since termites are so small, they could be lurking around your property for a long time before you actually notice them. Having a few termites around may not cause too much damage, but the more you have the worse the damage will be. Termites thrive on wood, specifically cellulose. They attack anything from furniture, to cabinets, to books. Termites eat away the wood they come across. They also can damage sheetrock, wallpaper and even plastic.

Termite Damage Signs

Termites are usually around during the Spring during the months of March through May. The warm temperatures and rainfall that occurs during the Spring attracts termites. Signs of termites and termite damage are easy to spot. Flinging winged termites can be spotted swarming around your home. If you see vertical tubes of mud outside on the ground that is a sure sign that termite are in lurking in your area.
Check for damage in common areas such as along the exterior and interior surfaces in the house. You can also check out the window sills, the basement area, outside on porches and fence. If you see cracked wood along the window or door frames, that is a sign of termite damage. Also, if there are unfamiliar holes in the wood that look like they have been eaten away, this is another sign of termite damage. If you knock on the walls in your home and they sound hollow, you could have termite tunnels inside the walls.

You Have Termite Damage, What Now?

After discovering you do in fact have termites infesting your home, it is important to get treatment as soon as possible. There are many ways to treat termite infestation in the home. Some methods for termite damage repair cost much more than others. The first thing to do to repair the damage caused by termites is to eliminate the problem; get rid of the termites. Have professionals come to your home to assist you in the elimination of termites. The cost of termite damage repair depends on many factors such as the size of your home and the amount of damage that is present. Prices for repair can be anywhere from $400 to $1000. Many companies will charge you a high fee the first time they come out, and charge smaller fees to come back from routine checkups and inspections.

You can also purchase sprays from home improvement stores to assist in the problem. Termite control sprays such as Termidor and Permethrin SFR termite spray are available to purchase in stores such as Home Depot and Lowes. This method is much cheaper than hiring a professional with prices ranging from $18 to $30 for a bottle. However, termite control sprays to not eliminate and wipe out the problem; they simply help you temporarily control the termite population. Depending on the extent of the damage that is present at your home, either one of these options may be beneficial for you. Termite damage can take anywhere from 3 – 5 years to get rid of.

How to Prevent Termite Damage in the Future

After controlling your termite problem it is important to make sure that you can prevent termite damage from recurring in the future. Termites love moist areas. Be sure to fix leaks in your house, and if possible move the air conditioning unit as far away from the house as possible. Also, be sure to keep your garden hose turned off and shut tightly so that it does not leak outside. Get rid of wood piles and construction debris as soon as possible. Cardboard is another material that should not be left around.
